Three Thoughts about Mission from a Rookie Youth Pastor

I just returned from my trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota where I attended the Desiring God 2011 National Conference. The focus of the conference was missions, both global and local. Here are three thoughts that I did not come up with, and which were helpful to me.

Three Thoughts about Mission

  1. “Local or World missions?” is not the right question. Ed Stetzer was very helpful in giving a biblical framework for understanding that we are all sent as ambassadors of Christ. The question is “to where” and “to what people.” Those of us with a focus on missional living cannot forget the global mission. And those who send to the unreached and unengaged cannot forget the need in our own neighborhoods.
  2. The Gospel is the power of God for salvation. The truth of Romans 1:16-17 was exemplified again and again as we heard story after story of the success of the power of the Gospel, apart from any trappings of eloquence, good methodology, or anything other than a proclamation of what God has done in Christ. Very encouraging.
  3. God’s sovereignty means that I need not fear embarrassment, loss, or death. One thread that wove itself through the Desiring God National Conference was the deep conviction that God is sovereign over our lives, including the day of our death. My obedience to God will not add or remove a day from my life; and I need not fear anything, because I will serve God for as long as He sees fit.

Later this week, I plan on posting my notes. You can download the main plenary sessions at the Desiring God Website.
